Martha Mapes,
Harpist
Providing classical music to Northwest Indiana, Chicago, and the surrounding area
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much do you charge?
I usually charge based on what other harpists in the area are charging. I want to be affordable but I also don't want to undermine my musician colleagues. I also take into account time spent preparing musical selections, organizing my music, transporting the harp, tuning, and transporting the harp back home. Usually I have a base fee and then charge based on the extra hours I may be playing.
Q: What if my wedding is not long?
I usually have a base fee regardless of how long a ceremony will last because of the cost of maintaining and transporting the harp. Extras such as playing at cocktail hour and special music may be subject to additional charge.
Q: How long will you play?
I will play for as long as you need me to. If there is unforseen circumstances and the ceremony runs longer or begins later than intended, I will stay and adjust. I want to make sure everyone is relaxed.
Q: If we decide to hire you how do we get in contact?
I will need your full name and address so I can send you a packet of information. You can email them to me or tell me over the telephone. The packet includes an instructional letter with complete directions, my business card, and the Performance Agreement. Make one copy of the Performance Agreement for yourself and return the signed copy to me with your deposit in the provided self-addressed, stamped envelope.
Q: Do you require a deposit?
I do require a non-refundable deposit of $50 that you can send in the self-addressed, stamped envelope with the Performance Agreement.
Q: When and how do we pay you?
I require the remaining balance to be paid at least 30 days prior to the ceremony or event. You can send me a check using my mailing address.
Q: Do you play outside? What do you do if there is unplanned bad weather?
Of course I can play outside! However, I would like to be informed of the conditions where I will be playing so I have a good idea what to expect. All clients with outdoor weddings must have a backup plan in case of weather emergencies.
Q: What kind of harp do you play on and what does it cost?
I play a Lyon & Healy Chicago Concert Grand. My harp and accessories cost about $16,500.
Q: Do you need someone to meet you when you arrive and to provide cues?
Yes. You will need someone to answer their cell phone and meet me when I arrive. I need to know where to put my harp, the schedule, and to cue me when to play what.
Q: What do you wear when you perform?
I will usually wear whatever color matches your wedding, or in concert black. I can also dress to match the theme of your party.
